Dermatologist, Dr Angela Tewari shares her top sunscreen picks that cater specifically to the needs of children with sensitive skin.
Putting sunscreen on children is a task few parents enjoy. Kids dislike being covered in sunscreen, and parents often find it gets everywhere.
Additionally, there’s the concern of aggravating eczema or sensitive skin. However, sunscreen is essential for shielding skin from harmful sunburn and cancer-causing rays, making it unavoidable.
Fortunately, there are sunscreens specifically designed for children and those with sensitive skin.
Dr Angela Tewari, Consultant Dermatologist at The Lister Hospital, HCA UK told Netmums that by choosing the right sunscreen, ‘you can help protect your children’s skin from sun damage and reduce their risk of developing skin cancer later in life.’

Dr Tewari said: ‘This sunscreen provides high protection, is suitable for sensitive skin, and is fragrance-free.’
It also offers high protection against both UVB and UVA rays. UVA rays are present throughout the day and can penetrate through clouds and windows. These are responsible for the vast majority of skin cancers.
While UVB rays can’t penetrate our skin as deeply, they are responsible for sunburn and are equally as dangerous as UVA rays. They can also be responsible for types of skin cancer such as melanoma.
It’s important when picking out a sunscreen that it protects from both rays.
This sunscreen also comes as an ‘invisible spray’, meaning no pasty white marks that kids hate.
Just remember, ‘re-apply frequently and generously to maintain protection, especially after swimming, perspiring or towelling.’

Dr Tewari recommends this sunscreen which she says is ‘easy to apply, water-resistant, and offers long-lasting protection’.
This sunscreen is specifically designed for the following:
- babies from 6 months
- children
- pregnant women
- very fair to fair skin
- people with tattoos
- injured skin such as scars or post-dermatologic acts.
Eucerin Kids Sun Spray SPF 50+ – £18.69

Eucerin’s kids’ SPF is specifically designed for little ones aged three months and up.
Dr Tewari said: ‘This spray is quick and easy to apply, making it ideal for active children. It’s also water-resistant and provides high protection.’
On the Eucerin website, it explains: ‘Eucerin Kids Sensitive Protect Spray SPF 50+ is sunscreen for children specially formulated to soothe sensitive skin and protect it from sunburn and long-term sun-induced damage.’
