What causes redness around lips?

“Over winter, the two main causes are lip-lick dermatitis and angular cheilitis,” says consultant dermatologist Dr Angela Tewari. “In response to cold weather, we lose moisture from the thin skin layer of our lips, which makes them look dry and cracked. Our response is to lick our lips to add moisture but this actually dries out the lips. Angular cheilitis involves cracks at the sides of the mouth. Often this is due to a low-level yeast infection or low iron levels.”

Dr Mahto adds: “The best treatment is prevention. Use a thick emollient-based lip balm and apply it frequently. If it’s not clearing after a while you may need a prescription ointment to help treat it. A dermatologist should be your first port of call here.”
